Calculator: what moving your cooling or heating could change

Before you price new equipment, check what changing the hours your existing equipment runs would do. This calculator, from Hungry Machines, models one day of air conditioning or heating to show that.

What it models

You enter your home's square footage, its insulation and the temperature range you find comfortable. The calculator models one day of heating or cooling for that home twice: on a flat rate, and on a peak rate that runs from 4 pm to 9 pm. It shows the two days side by side.

Every number it shows is modeled. It is an estimate from what you entered, not a measurement of your home, not your bill and not a quote.

Shift first

Shifting means running what you already own at different hours. You cool the house before the peak instead of during it, or run the water heater at night. It needs no new equipment and no permit.

It only matters if your plan charges different prices at different hours. Look up your plan's rate schedule first. If every hour costs the same, moving your use to another hour does not change the price you pay per kilowatt-hour.

If shifting is not enough for your home, the page for your state lists the programs that are still open and the installers who can do the work. Start from the front page.

If the frame below is empty, the calculator's site is not letting this page show it. The link at the top of the page opens it there.
